The Power of Mindfulness in the Face of Racism

Racism doesn’t always show up as a slur. Sometimes it walks into a dinner party as a “joke,” a backhanded compliment, a loaded question, snickering guests or a quiet dismissal of someone’s lived experience and then the whole room waits to see who will explode. We name what’s happening, why these moments feel so charged, especially in the U.S. and why pretending “it doesn’t exist” can be its own kind of harm.

We also dig into the messy modern reality of race relations online, including so-called social experiments that cross the line into harassment. We talk about consent, escalation, and how viral content can reinforce stereotypes even when the creator claims they’re educating. From being touched without permission to being judged in public spaces, we keep coming back to a simple question: how do we stand up for ourselves and others without turning the moment into a brawl?

You’ll hear real-world examples of microaggressions and coded bias like “you speak so articulately,” along with the pressure many people feel to stay quiet to avoid being stereotyped. Then we share a few scripts that you can use in various scenarios: “What did you mean by that?”, “I’m not sure I get the joke, can you explain it?”, “That’s not a fair generalization,” and “Just because you haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean it isn’t real.” We also cover when it’s best to step in as a bystander, and when the safest, most mindful choice is to simly excuse yourself.

If you want tools for calm communication, de-escalation, and setting boundaries around racist comments without losing your center, this conversation is for you. Please subscribe, share this with a friend, and thank you for tuning in!
